Digital X-rays

An innovative diagnostic tool, digital X-rays allow for a more detailed examination of the teeth. Digital radiography (digital X-rays) detect abnormalities in the teeth and soft tissues that are not visible to the naked eye. Instead of utilizing radiographic film, digital X-rays upload images via an electronic sensor to a computer. This allows Dr. Ron Kaminer the ability to enlarge the image so that he can take a closer look at potential problems. When uploaded to the computer, digital X-ray images provide a more detailed view of the teeth and oral cavity. The software used on the computer provides dentists with the ability to accurately measure the size of caries and previous dental work.

What Can Digital X-rays Reveal?

  • Bone loss
  • Tooth decay – especially between the teeth
  • Malignant and benign tumors
  • Developmental abnormalities among children
  • Cysts and abscesses
  • Problems below the gum line
  • Abnormalities inside the tooth
  • Poor root and tooth positions

Are Digital X-rays Safe?

Traditional dental radiography emits a low amount of radiation. Digital X-rays utilize 80 to 90% less radiation than conventional X-rays, thus making it safer for patients.

The amount of radiation used to capture X-ray images on film is not a cause for concern. The radiation present in dental X-rays is equivalent to the amount of radiation exposure we experience on a daily basis from sources such as ultra violet rays, living in a brick house, sleeping next to someone, and even reading a book for three hours each day.

For digital X-rays, the most beneficial feature is the ability to enlarge images, measure abnormalities, and detect potential problems. Diagnostic technology benefits the patient because it can be used to prevent costly and invasive treatment for abnormalities that would otherwise go undetected.
